UWB Technique for Detection of Live Buried Persons under Debris

Abstract :

In this paper, a theoretical model for the propagation of ultra-wideband radar signals through some of the common types of building materials covering a human victim during collapse of a building or an earthquake is presented. The wave propagation attributes such as signal reflection, transmission and attenuation are calculated by following the analytical impedance transformation approach on a planar multilayered dispersive model in the frequency range of 1 to 3 GHz using MATLAB. The difference in the above propagation characteristic parameters when the radar beam is focused atop the pile of the building debris is truly the index of the life sign. The model predicted results will enable efficient power budget estimation for an UWB radar based life detection system.
