Missing Mass Correction in Stiff Bottom Storey Buildings

Abstract :

In practice, most of the buildings in urban areas are provided with an underground basement parking floors. These floors carry heavy mass as compared to the upper floors. To resist the soil surrounding to the building, retaining walls are provided at the periphery. Therefore, the bottom storeys become very stiff. Here in the basement mass is not excited in the initial modes. In general, for usual structures 90 % of mass is contributed by the initial few modes, hence considering first few modes for calculating base shear gives correct estimation. However, from the study presented in this paper it is found that, it is not sufficient to consider only first few modes for calculating base shear in case of stiff bottom storey buildings. Less than 50 % of mass is contributed by the initial modes. It is observed that, there is about 38 % to 58 % of error in calculation of base shear if only first three modes are considered.
