Abstract :

This article presents an analysis of the existing dichotomy between the theory that encompasses the process of school evaluation and the reality of the municipal education system in the city of Petrópolis, in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The research aims to identify the dichotomous points between what recommended in terms of school evaluation and the practice in which the municipal education system in that municipality anchored. From the historical chain of this process applied in Brazil, through the case study developed in that municipality, in a descriptive and exploratory manner, it was possible to show how far theory and practice remain, as well as their consequences and possibilities for developing an evaluation process pedagogically effective.
