Abstract :

Manual welding techniques can be time-consuming and require skilled human resources for welding of various joints. Also, due to the absence of a clamping mechanism in manual welding, it becomes more difficult to weld the workpiece productively. Manual gas tungsten arc welding (TIG) is a relatively difficult welding method due to the coordination required by the welder for maintaining a short arc length, contact between the electrode and the workpiece. Welding is a manufacturing process that includes the joining of materials, usually metals, by causing fusion, which is different from lower temperature metal joining techniques such as soldering and brazing without causing any harm to the base metal. In addition to melting the base metal, a filler material is added to the joint to form a pool of molten material that cools to form a joint. The joint or weld bead that formed can usually be more robust than the base metal itself. It is also required to shield the weld pool during the welding process to prevent contamination, which leads to weaker joints. An automated welding booth which performs versatile welding operations and reduces the time required for welding and obtaining a good joint at a low cost without much skilled labour was a design and fabricated. Some of the objectives are a)To simplify the welding operations. b)To design a welding machine to carry out versatile joints and welding operations. TIG welding is performed in a booth automatically by using programming with a clamping mechanism that holds the workpiece while performing welding operations.
