Abstract :

The present study examines the adsorption of nitrobenzene from aqueous solutions, using bagasse fly ash (BFA), which is a solid waste generated from bagasse-fired boilers, as an adsorbent. Batch adsorption studies have been performed to evaluate the influence of various parameters, such as initial pH, adsorbent dose (m), contact time (t), and initial concentration (C0) on the removal of nitrobenzene from the aqueous solutions. The maximum removal of nitrobenzene was determined to be 96% at lower concentrations (50 mg/L) and 61.8% at higher concentrations (300 mg/L), using a BFA dosage of 10 g/L at 303K. Studies on nitrobenzene adsorption kinetics by BFA have been conducted. The adsorption kinetics of nitrobenzene was well represented by pseudo second-order kinetic model. The desorption of nitrobenzene from nitrobenzene loaded BFA with several solvents shows that only 27% and 36% of nitrobenzene could be recovered, using ethyl alcohol and acetone respectively.
