Abstract :

Dam break analysis is very crucial for investigating future effects caused to human life and property by the sudden release of large volume of water to the inundation region of a dam. When a section of a dam gets breached, catastrophic flooding will occur as a very large amount of water flows through the breach section in a short time interval into the downstream area. Every well-constructed as well as proposed dams must be analysed for the probability of dam break because even with enhanced technology, failure cannot be fully rooted out based on the huge level of risks associated with it. So to minimize the risk at the downstream region, analysis of pressure variation, velocity profile and effect of turbulence should be done. The work shown here comprises of information on an unsteady three-dimensional dam break flow. The three-dimensional dam break flow are analysed by using different turbulence model, the large eddy simulation and the k-epsilon turbulence model .Volume of fluid(VOF) method is used for tracking the free surface of the dam break flow. Simulations of dam break flow were done by using a CFD package, Ansys Fluent.
