The pharmaceutical industry has a history of mergers, acquisitions and buyouts that are not limited by national boundaries. In early 1990s the M&A were primarily driven by a desire to cut the cost in the late 1990s research and development opportunities appears to be the driven force. The pharmaceutical industry is one of the most research oriented sector in the all over the world. Nowadays M&A are in a fashion. Most of the daily newspapers are filed with healthiness of merger, acquisition, takeover, joint venture etc. In recent times M&A have attempted to restructure the firms and achieve economics of scale to deal with an increasingly competitive environment. This study shows the impact of Mergers and Acquisitions in the Indian Pharmaceutical sector and two cases have been taken for study as sample to examine as to whether the merger has led to a profitable situation or not. For this purpose, a comparison between pre and post merger performance in terms of Operating Profit Margin, Net Profit Margin, Return on Assets, Return on Equity, Earning per Share, Debt Equity Ratio, Dividend Payout Ratio and Market Share Price has been made in case of Cadila Healthcare and Glaxosmithakline.
